Adieu

A hair fell from her head. It fell and fell
and I followed it with my gaze. It landed
in one of the trays that sat on a scale.
It threw the scale out of balance. The scale
tilted. It tilted and kept on tilting. Then it
made contact with the detonator of the com-
plex device, and that was the end. But even
now I can see this hair falling before what
once were my eyes. Like a hand, waving.

ADÉ
Ein Haar fiel von ihrem Haupt. Es fiel und fiel
und ich verfolgte es mit meinem Blick. Es landete
in einer Schüssel, die sich auf einer Waagschale
befand. Daraufhin geriet die Waage ins Ungleich-
gewicht. Sie neigte sich. Immer weiter neigte
sie sich. Dann berührte sie den Zünder der kompli-
zierten Vorrichtung, und das war das Ende. Aber
noch jetzt kann ich vor meinem ehemaligen Auge
dieses Haar herunterfallen sehen. Wie ein Winken.
