The War of the Orchards 14

Translated from the Spanish by Jeannine Marie Pita

On all the happy mornings, when the trees get covered in oranges, in lilies of fire, between November and December, and in school during the exam festivities, and Mother arranges the honeycombs, and the jasmine appears, multiplied by a million, like an infinite Virgin Mary, and the most holy gladiolus lifts its white flames, its white branches, when the gladiolus garden is stopped by our house like a ship of raving candles, and Mother comes rowing in the sea of gladioli, in this whitest tide that inundates the farmhouse, the neighbors’ house, the most distant meadows, and all of us die sweetly.
