Detroiter Jamaal May is the author of Hum (Alice James Books 2013), winner of the Beatrice Hawley award, as well as two chapbooks,The Whetting of Teeth and The God Engine. His poems have been published widely with his most recent work appearing or forthcoming in Poetry, Ploughshares, New England Review, Kenyon Review, and The Believer. Jamaal has appeared on television, radio, and in films such as Zug and A Poet in Every Classroom. A graduate of Warren Wilson’s MFA for Writers, he is the recipient of fellowships and scholarships from Cave Canem, Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference, and Bucknell University, where he was named the 2011-2013 Stadler Fellow.
